SETTLEMENT PROGRAM
Case Study – Early Intervention for a Newly Arrived Family
A newly arrived family from Myanmar was referred to MIC shortly after settling in Australia. The family had limited English, was unfamiliar with the Australian health and children’s service systems, and was overwhelmed by the complex needs of two young children living with long-term chronic health conditions.
MIC completed an immediate intake and comprehensive needs assessment, working closely with interpreters to understand the family’s circumstances. The family was promptly connected to specialist pediatrics services, a general practitioner, maternal and child health services, disability and community supports, and assisted to navigate referrals, appointments and transport. Staff also provided information about available financial and settlement supports to reduce barriers to accessing care.
Case Study – Client Feedback Driving Service Improvement
Feedback from newly arrived clients highlighted the positive impact of MIC’s settlement support and identified opportunities to further strengthen services. Clients expressed appreciation for the time, care and assistance provided, with one commenting, “Thank you for the support and assistance provided. I appreciate the time and effort taken to help me.” Others encouraged the team to “Keep up the great work.”
Case Study – Holistic Support for a Farsi-Speaking Client
A Farsi-speaking client was referred to MIC with multiple settlement challenges, including social isolation, financial stress, difficulty accessing health services and limited understanding of Australian systems. A medium-intensity case plan was developed to address the client’s immediate and longer-term needs. Through bilingual case management, the client was connected to healthcare providers, financial counselling, English language classes, community groups and employment support. Regular follow-up ensured referrals were successfully accessed and emerging issues were addressed promptly. As a result, the client reported increased confidence, improved wellbeing and greater independence in navigating services, while developing stronger social connections within the local community.
